ABOUT US

Alternative Approach is a Non Governmental non-profit social welfare Organization (NGO)in Bangladesh. It is registered with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Bangladesh. The organization was established in 2002 in the City of Cumilla and was registered with the NGO Bureau. However, after some years of inactivity now shifted its office in Dhaka and widened its activity area in all over Bangladesh.
Mission Statement
To be involved in various developments, community upliftment and social welfare program in Bangladesh with the partnership of community members, philanthropic individuals and Aid agencies in home and abroad.
Objective
To establish and run different projects in education, health care, poverty alleviation, environmental protection and empowerment of disadvantaged people through innovative approach.
OUR PROJECTS
Past Projects
Community Cattle Fattening Project
​
Alternative Approach established and ran a Community Cattle fattening project in Sonakanda village of Chandina upazilla in Cumilla district. The project was made possible through partnership with an Australian based non-profit organization SHEBA (Social Help Endeavour for Bangladesh). Each participating family (landless farm workers) was given a cow/ ox to raise and fatten for 6 months cycle. Money for the cattle feed was provided as well. The cycle was repeated to multiply the profit and the beneficiary families were able to generate ongoing income stream.
Farmers’ Education Initiative

Alternative Approached ran a information and education provision for a group of small farmers in Monagram village of Sadar upazilla in Cumilla district in 2010. The program was facilitated by a laptop donated by SHEBA (Social Help Endeavour for Bangladesh) from Australia. The program utilized various audiovisual and online learning tool. The farmers were able to access farming related information and education through this initiative

COVID Hardship Assistance for Families in need
It was a cash grant programme for a number of families in various parts in Dhaka and Chattogram cities to help them in their hardship due to job/ income loss attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. These families were otherwise solvent before the pandemic. However, they couldn’t queue in the street for relief package due to social stigma. The project ran in May 2020.

Food Relief for Destitute Families
During the COVID pandemic, Alternative Approach ran a food package relief program in Chandina upazilla of Cumilla district as well as Chatmohar, Faridpur and Bhangura upazillas of Pabna district. A total of 147 families received food packages. The program ran in two phases form May 2020 to July 2020.
ONGOING PROJECTS
EDUCATION & RESEARCH
Alternative Approach is currently funding a research project conducted by Bangladesh Institute of Family Medicine Training and Research (BIFMTR). It is a qualitative research titled ‘Reasons for medication non-compliance among patients with Type 2 Diabetes in a rural community in Bangladesh’. The setting of the research project is in Sheba Sastho Kendro (Sheba Health Centre) in Chatmohar upazilla of Pabna district.

PARTNERSHIP WITH SHEBA
A Melbourne based NGO SHEBA (Social Help Endeavour for Bangladesh) has established partnership with Alternative Approach since SHEBA was formed in 2007. We plan to run our future projects in collaboration with them where practicable.
CONSULTATIVE FORUM ON HHCA
Consultative Forum on Home Health Care Assistant Training and Employment Program jointly hosted by Sheba and Alternative Approach. Date: 15th January, 2020. Venue: Board room, The daily Amader Notun Shomoy. The meeting was presided over by Mrs Nasima Khan, editor, The Amader Notun Shomoy. The representatives of both organizations attended the forum. Dignitaries from print and electronic media, Directors of different government and private hospitals, various medical specialists, Bureaucrats, journalists, engineers and representative from other NGOs participated in the discussion forum.
There was a presentation on the concept and the vision was outlined.
Both organizations agreed to launch a Home Health Care Assistant training and employment program in Dhaka city through a joint collaboration. The participants of the consultative forum gave their inputs and encouragement to the project.
